Earthly Delights Corinna Chapman Mysteries Kerry Greenwood Books
Although I read the series far out of order, beginning with Trick or Treat, which a friend passed on to me after a library booksale, this was an excellent beginning to the series and I would (had I read it first) have certainly continued on. Corinna does not (as one reviewer opined when discussing a later book in the series) seem smug; instead, she seems a woman extraordinarily comfortable with herself, with definitive views, a strong sense of morality and even greater compassion. I love the quiry assembly of characters inhabiting the fictional apartment building of Insula. A delightful read.Tags : Amazon.com: Earthly Delights (Corinna Chapman Mysteries) (9781590583937): Kerry Greenwood: Books,Kerry Greenwood,Earthly Delights (Corinna Chapman Mysteries),Poisoned Pen Press,1590583930,Apartment dwellers;Fiction.,Bakers;Fiction.,Neighbors;Fiction.,AUSTRALIAN NOVEL AND SHORT STORY,Apartment dwellers,Australia,Bakers,FICTION Mystery & Detective Amateur Sleuth,FICTION Mystery & Detective Cozy Culinary,FICTION Mystery & Detective Cozy General,FICTION Mystery & Detective Women Sleuths,FICTION Women,Fiction,Fiction - Mystery Detective,Fiction Mystery & Detective General,Fiction-Mystery & Detective,GENERAL,General Adult,MYSTERY AND SUSPENSE FICTION,Monograph Series, 1st,Mystery & Detective - Women Sleuths,MysterySuspense,Neighbors,United States, cozy mysteries;cozy;baker;Australia;Melbourne;murder;murder mysteries;mystery books;best sellers;best seller
Earthly Delights Corinna Chapman Mysteries Kerry Greenwood Books Reviews
Premise Corinna left a life in the corporate world and the spouse who fit there to move into a building full of friendly eccentrics and open her own bakery. She has a routine, regular customers, and cats. Then an overdosing addict shows up on her doorstep, the women in her apartment building start receiving odd threats, and she meets a charming man who seems to be charmed by her. It’s all a bit much at once, but Corinna faces everything in life straight on.
This is the modern-day series by the author of the Phryne Fisher books. And yes, I agree with all the folks who say that, at least in this volume, it isn’t nearly as good.
The characters are fun, if often stereotypes of a sort. The setting is interesting, and the dialogue and narration is snappy.
“I believe in absolutely nothing except yeast and the inevitability of politicians…”
The beginning of this book was exactly what I needed when I opened it up. I loved getting to know Corrina her daily routine, her world, her attitude. Somewhere along the way it all started to seem a little too easy and ring a little false, though.
The main climax was… weak. Lets just say it was supposed to be both tense and erotic, and all I could think was really? All the psuedo-realism earlier and no one’s going to mention how insanely unsafe of a sex act that just was? Not normally unsafe, crazy unsafe. This is not the 70’s. You could die doing stupid shit like that. The explanations about the plot were more than a little hand-wavy, too.
That said, I loved the beginning, and I did enjoy most of the other sub-plots, so I will try the next one to see if it finds its feet. Also, there are recipes in the back.
The Corinna Chapman books are an easy read for people just looking for a fun diversion. As a fan of the Phrynne Fisher mysteries, I was expecting (and received) an eccentric cast. This book did not disappoint. I could have done without some of the kinkier details of the ending, but as a whole the book was interesting and engaging. I hope that since the series is set in Phrynne's city that I will see some descendants of those characters...while it likely won't be Phrynne's offspring, it would be nice to see some of the others show up. From the Li household perhaps...or even Dot and Tom or Bert and Cec. In the meantime, I have read the second book and ordered the third. They make a nice detour from reality for a few hours.
Ex-banker and accountant Corinna Chapman has left the world of high finance behind in favor of a less stressful and more satisfying career as an artisan baker with her own shop. When starting her working day at the ungodly hour of 4 AM, Corinna finds a young girl near death from a drug overdose, which seems to be part of a new epidemic in Melbourne, many ending in death. In between baking rye bread and muffins, Corinna begins picking up clues that lead her to the possible source of the drugs and deaths.
To say that his book is full of unique and quirky characters is an understatement. We're presented with a witch. Goths who aspire to be soap opera actresses, a cross dresser who sells sex toys and lingerie, asocial geeks, a professor of classical works, and more all living in a vintage building designed to mimic ancient Roman elegance.
The mystery could have been overwhelmed by the introduction of all of these characters and the neighborhood places of business, but the story and characters mesh together well. The sequence of events and character introductions are presented along with the mystery allowing the reader to piece the clues together along with Corinna and her new boyfriend, Daniel, who has an aura of mystery himself. There are several subplots going on dealing with a missing daughter, a homeless apprentice, and an unhappy marriage.
One warning about a section of the book that may disturb some readers and would be considered inappropriate for younger readers. Overall the book is mostly PG-rated, but there is a section that goes beyond that into R-rated territory while Corinna and Daniel are at a Goth night club inhabited by some extremely odd pretend vampires and their followers. It's unfortunate that this small part of the book crosses the line, making it off-limits to sensitive or younger readers.
Recommended, but not for younger audiences.
