This book is interesting in several different areas.
I initially picked this up because I was interested in learning about Dave Pallone's story about his struggle to keep his homosexuality a secret in order to keep a job he loved, back in the 70's through the '80's when the sports world had no place nor tolerance for those who had a "deviant" sexual orientation. And it was a hard story to read about. He could NEVER relax his guard or take for granted anything about the possibility his private life becoming public. His relationships had to ALL be kept undercover. He writes about it well enough that I got a nervous stomachache in sympathy for him as I experienced his tension and worry right along with him.
Within a few chapters I also became interested in his professional life as a baseball umpire. I am mostly indifferent about baseball but he managed to capture my attention and keep my interest as I learned what it takes to be a sports official in general and a baseball umpire specifically. But additionally, he had not only a difficult personal life, he also had a harrowing professional life, made that way by the very people he had to work closely with and who wouldn't hesitate for a second to stab him in the heart and twist the knife if they even suspected his secret life. He crossed a picket line in '79 from the minor leagues, a crime to die-hard unionists worse than murder. It took YEARS for most of those strikers to finally accept him, and some NEVER did, even 10 years after the incident. Fortunately though, he was able to make a few good and loyal friends with mature and civilized people. Then, finally, in the late '80's, by some sneaky and underhanded dealing on the "inside," he was let go from the job that he loved, even through all the mental and emotional harassment he had to deal with in performing it. Most of us wouldn't have the mental fortitude to continue on a path that held so many obstacles and such open hateful, unfair treatment from an entire organization, but he STILL loved that job and he communicates that love in every paragraph. Highly recommend this book.

This story is a well written account of a gay man's life in the world of baseball. The coping with being gay and staying the closet to protect
your loved ones and to keep a job you excelled at and loved.
Can be enjoyed reading for everyone.
Great book. Well written.
Dave Pallone's memoir came out before I was a baseball fan, when I was a young college student—who wasn't bullied, wasn't struggling with identity, etc., but his book was very influential and important. Now that I've become a baseball fan and an older adult, I can't wait to re-read it through a richer point of view.
This is a honest and point of the matter life story of Dave Pallone. It is an easy and quick read.If you are a fan of baseball, you will enjoy this book.Note he is frank about his coming to terms with his sexuality.
Very inspiring story. Every page was riviting. Highly recommend for anybody who has dealt with adversity in their lives, not just for baseball fans or LGBT community.
I WAS HESITANT TO READ THIS AT FIRST. I KNEW OF MR PALLONE FROM WATCHING GAMES AND FROM THE ATTENTION HE GOT FROM THE BIG TUSSLE WITH PETE ROSE. DID I REALLY WANT TO READ ABOUT A GAY UMPIRE? WELL I OPENED MY MIND AND I AM SO GLAD I DID. THIS IS A VERY OPEN AND WELL TOLD STORY OF HIS LIFE ON AND OFF THE FIELD. DAVE WAS A TAKE NO CRAP FROM ANYONE TYPE OF PERSON WHICH SHOULD THE WAY AN UMPIRE SHOULD BE. HE ALSO DISCOVERED HE HAD AN ATTRACTION TO MEN. ONCE HE REACHED THE MAJOR LEAGUES HIS SECRET HAD TO REMAIN A SECERT OR HE WOULD CERTAINLY BE RELEASED. DAVE HAD A SERIOUS RELATIONSHIP BUT THE YOUNG MAN DIED FROM INJURIES IN A CAR ACCIDENT. DAVE WAS SHUNNED AS AN UMPIRE FOR BEING A SCAB WHILE BEING HIRED DURING AN UMPIRE STRIKE AND WOULD BE TREATED ROUGHLY MOST OF HIS CAREER. WELL DAVE WAS LINKED TO A CHILD MOLESTING CRIME AND EVEN THOUGH HE WAS NOT ARRESTED, IT COST HIM HIS JOB. THIS IS A REALLY INTERESTING AND WELL WRITTEN BOOK. I SALUTE DAVE FOR HAVING THE GUTS TO TELL HIS STORY.
Longtime baseball fans will recognize many of
the player and staff names. Easy, pleasant read.
