I submitted one review for this book but it was bumped due to the fact that I inserted one curse word. Carlin would get a kick out of that. How can you write about this guy without expletives? Jesus ####### Christ! But it was interesting to compare Carlin's autobiographical book, 'Last Words,' with Sullivan's. Carlin's book was somewhat bias and self appreciating but you have to expect that from autobiographies. Sullivan, on the other hand, took more of detailed, factual examination of Carlin's life which was interesting but sometimes boring. How can this man's life be boring? He was self abusive and audience abusive but at the same time brilliant, creative and amazingly observant. He and Pryor were comic genius' and the world is a sadder, duller place without them around.

7 Dirty Words The Life and Crimes of George Carlin James Sullivan 9780306818295 Books Reviews

James Sullivan did an extraordinary amount of research for this book. He writes about George in a very informative yet interesting manner. I do love George's humor and it is fun to read how he evolved and what his process was for writing his comedy. If you loved George you will love this book!
A great way to enjoy the words of a great man that has brought us so much common sense in life that we need more then ever.
The very first Carlin's book I read, and enjoyed very much; couldn't wait to read the others... R. R. Solorzano
Very funny! I believe I have most of his records; that is why I wanted to read this book about his life.
Mr. Sullivan's biography of George Carlin is a commendable overview of the great comedian's life but falls short of delving too deep into his troubles with drugs or his relationship with his beloved wife, Brenda. If you're expecting loads of laughs, you're in for a disappointment. The author, however, does well in covering the comedian's New York City childhood, his brief stints in radio as well as his quick rise and struggles once he headed to California. He also does a fine job explaining how The-7-Dirty-Words bit eventually wound up in front of the Supreme Court and how the nine old men voted. Such autobiographies as Steve Martin's "Born Standing Up" and Carlin's own "Last Words" are more gritty and graphic in describing the life of a stand-up comic than Mr. Sullivan's biography. Maybe, some day, another author will make a more in-depth effort on this highly influential comedian. But for now, if you are an admirer of Mr. Carlin's body of work, you'll probably enjoy the author's epitaph.
just the name "George Carlin" is enough to rate 10 stars! excellent book, by the way.
George Carlin at his finest! If you don't know him or his work, this is a great introduction. Like all his comedy, I found him to be more philosopher than anything else (like I do most good comics). But George was the one out there, he was the one with the greatest timing, he dared to touch on the "untouchable" subjects. Even in 2015, it's hard to imagine a time existed when these words couldn't be on radio/TV. It must be mind-blowing to those under the age of 30 now. This is highly recommended.
