Elizabeth and Tara-Starr are best friends, even though they live completely different lives. Elizabeth comes from a wealthy family; she lives in the lap of luxury in a very expensive house, and her parents are very concerned about their place in society. Tara-Starr's family never seems to have money, because her parents are pretty irresponsible. They had her very young and she sometimes feels like she is more of a parent to them than they are parents to her. However, Elizabeth and Tara-Starr's friendship is able to overcome these things.

Then Tara-Starr moves far away. She and Elizabeth have to continue their friendship through letters to each other, since neither of their families will allow them to call each other on the phone and they are too far away to visit.

At first the letters are pretty normal; Elizabeth and Tara-Starr are the same as they have always been. Then things start to change. Tara-Starr's parents actually seem to be taking some responsibility and acting like adults. At the same time, things in Elizabeth's life seem to be falling apart. Something bad is happening with her parents, and she is getting more and more worried. Can their friendship survive when Tara-Starr's life is so wonderful and Elizabeth's is so awful?

I liked the letter format of this story, and the two main characters were pretty vivid because of their writing. They were a bit immature, though, for the age they are supposed to be. A limitation to this style of writing was that the reader didn't really get any extra details of the lives of these girls. I would have liked to have had a more well-rounded view of Elizabeth's and Tara-Starr's life.
--Elizabeth Richardson is in for a difficult seventh-grade year. Shortly before the year starts, her best friend Tara-Starr Lane moves to Ohio, leaving Elizabeth lonely and angry. After getting over the shock of her best friend's moving, Elizabeth watches in horror as her father, fired from his well-paying job, sinks into alcoholism and depression. Elizabeth knows her family is falling apart, and she writes about all this in letters to her best friend, now calling herself "Tara*Starr" with the star in the middle, whose life is drastically improving her previously childlike parents are now acting like parents, and her family is making enough money not to have to use food stamps and other such charities the girls' lives are rapidly changing and they are becoming different as well can they still survive being best friends with their changing lives and the distance between them? --I found this book very realistic, probably because it was written letter by letter, just as it would have been done in real life! Paula Danziger and Ann M. Martin are different people, and although they aren't exactly the same as their characters, their traits show up in their characters' writing, forming an intriguing relationship both with the characters and with them. And, of course, they have dedicated the book to Kathy Ames, the pen pal of Ann's who introduced Paula to Ann. --Marisa
lists the age for this book as 8 & up, but I had my doubts so I previewed it for my 9 yr old. It's definitely not age-appropriate for my daughter! Another reviewer mentioned 12-16 year olds, I would agree.

Spoiler Alert -- this paragraph includes some details you discover later in the book. The parents really don't look good, but the issues are heavy for even a ten year old. One girl has parents who had to get married at 18 because they got pregnant with her. The other girl's dad goes from normal to becoming an alcoholic who then suddenly out of nowhere abandons his wife and two daughters. There is talk of whether he's having an affair.

These are serious issues that I don't need my daughter reading until we're ready to sit down and have some long conversations about teen pregnancy, alcohol, infidelity. Another problem with a 9 yr old reading this, well, my daughter is still the Santa age if you know what I mean. She may have her questions about it, but the magic is still alive, and she's the oldest of three so I'm not going there yet.

I enjoyed the book, and I concur with what some of the top reviewers said -- it's a sensitive portrayal of a friendship, with lots of poetry and an innovative narrative style (the book entirely consists of the girls' letters). I'll definitely give it to my daugther to read when she's ready!
It seems strange to say this is one of the most influential book series I ever read, but the truth is, the things that influence us as children can leave very deep imprints. And though I probably wouldn't be influenced hardly at all by this book if I read it now, as an adult, at the time it deeply influenced my life and I am so grateful for it.

When I was a kid, one of my FAVORITE books which really influenced how I saw the world was P.S. Longer Letter Later. I don't necessarily recommend giving it to your kids if they struggle with anxiety, because after I read the sequel I was terrified (completely without reason, mind you) that my parent would commit suicide (as, spoiler alert, one of the parents in the sequel does), but the idea of a penpal stuck with me, and I dearly wished for one.

Through reading about those girls, I felt less alone. They prepared me when my parents got divorced, because one of their parents divorced so I didn't feel so alone. I could relate and felt a common bond with one of the two girls, and it gave me a connection at a time of my life when I had little.

And why do I say it still impacts me to this day? Because when I became an adult, I was inspired by my experiences reading this book to form a penpal program online to help every child find the friendship that these two fictional characters share. So, yeah, it's a pretty deep impact. I owe the authors a huge thanks for touching my life.
