I often wonder if my life path would have been different if books like this had been around when I was a teen trying to come to terms with myself. As it happened, I didn't have anything like this so I did what was expected of me - not what I wanted. I'm so happy that my own children could read about teens struggling with their sexuality - if they ever needed to.

This story takes the reader into the lives of high school juniors Marlee McAllister and Susie Torres as they discover love for the first time. Marlee struggles with her single mother's potential reaction and reaches out to her best friend Jeri D'Amico. Jeri is surprisingly accepting of the relationship. Susie deals with the complicated relationship she already has with best friend Christy Loveland, ultimately having to choose between Christy and Marlee.

It's not a terribly complicated story, but it's certainly moving on many levels. Books such as these don't often get enough press, but they should. That's especially true when they're as good and thoughtful as this one.

I loved this book. It's a very sweet coming-of-age, coming out, first love story, but what makes it special is the awesome softball angle. Also the characters are very vivid and complex.

Marlee's father died when she was small, and she still misses him. One of the reasons she likes softball so much is that her father used to play ball with her. Marlee's trying to figure out what to do about her boyfriend. He really wants to get physical already and she can't figure out why she's not that into him. Then she sees Susie Torres, a player on a rival team, and she starts to feel something special for her. This is not one of those sad "dealing with homophobia" problem novels; it's just a great love story. Also I learned a lot about baseball (I had no idea, for example, that the catcher has so much responsibility. I thought all they had to do was catch the ball!) Apparently the author has written two other teen novels, one about an art chick and one about a dancer, so I'm looking forward to reading those too.
Barbara L. Clanton perfectly captures the feeling of being sixteen and in love in this realistic, emotionally charged tale.

But Marlee's world is about to become a lot more complicated when she meets Susie, a rival softball player. Susie's beautiful, kind-hearted, and hiding a mess of secrets.

Like any 16-year-old, Marlee navigates the world of teen parties, sports, school, best friends, and family, with obstacles around every turn. More than a sports book, more than a teenage romance, Out of Left Field is a literary home run.
